В основу легли опубликованные исследования и сообщения Sokolov, 585 Золотой, Sunlight, Ex Libris, Smart Diamonds, Банка «Открытие», «Ренессанс страхования», Sravni, The Knot, De Beers и BriteCo, а также CheckIndex, Data Insight и Яндекса.
61% lab-grown у The Knot — показатель американских помолвочных колец, а De Beers отдельно показывает bridal и non-bridal спрос на natural diamonds.
FAQ

Open Research · buyer surveys
Who buys diamonds and jewellery: what surveys say in Russia and worldwide
Abstract. The “diamond buyer” is not one person but several different scenarios: a gift for a date, a purchase for oneself, a collection, an engagement. Open surveys and chain data show this well — if incomparable figures are not folded into one portrait. Russian retail rests on a female audience, with male demand growing; offline still matters for an expensive choice, while e-commerce and marketplaces have long lived as separate channels. We unpack Russian and US sources, including the apparent split between 81% holiday gifts and 53% purchases for oneself or a collection. Each figure stays in the original frame of question, sample and period.
Keywords: who buys diamonds, jewellery buyer survey, self purchase, The Knot, Sokolov, Ex Libris
Introduction
The phrase “diamond buyer” is fine until the first real decision — about a product, a counter or a message. Then it breaks into living people with different occasions. One is looking for earrings for an anniversary, another is choosing a first piece for themselves, a third comes for a ring after a conversation with a partner. Age and income may be similar; the reason for the purchase may be entirely different.
Russian publications more often measure jewellery in general, not diamonds as a separate good. Where a source speaks of an engagement ring or the origin of a stone, the frame is already narrower. That is a material caveat: wedding statistics cannot quietly be turned into statistics of earrings, gift pendants or the whole diamond category.
So there will be no search below for an “average buyer”. Instead — stable signals: who comes into the chains, whom the purchase is for, where the deal closes, what happens to the ticket, and why two loud figures about the occasion of purchase do not in fact argue with each other.
Method and sources
The base is published studies and statements by Sokolov, 585 Zolotoy, Sunlight, Ex Libris, Smart Diamonds, Otkritie Bank, Renaissance Insurance, Sravni, The Knot, De Beers and BriteCo, as well as CheckIndex, Data Insight and Yandex. Source arrays were not recalculated. If a company did not disclose the questionnaire or sample size, the gap remains a gap — without guesses.
Every number here has its own address. Boutique clients are not the whole population. The answer “I buy as a gift” is not the same as an answer about the last purchase or about willingness to buy for oneself. The share of an online store in turnover is not the share of those who named a marketplace as the main place of purchase. Finally, publications of different years describe the market at different moments.
Ex Libris surveyed 2,500 respondents from December 2025 to April 2026. The Renaissance Insurance and Sokolov study in February 2026 included 1,204 women. 585×Artix reports a survey of 1,100 participants and in-depth interviews, BriteCo — 1,002 US adults in October 2025. Smart Diamonds works in the grown-stone segment, De Beers in the natural-diamond contour. That does not cancel their data, but it explains why the commissioner’s context stays next to the figure.
Russia: who buys
In Sokolov boutiques in 2024 women were 74% of buyers, men 26%. The core is the 26–35 group. In the same base, male demand grew 35% year on year, female 19%. The conclusion here is simple and without extra drama: there are more women in the client base, but the male part of demand is adding faster. Chains should look more carefully at male scenarios — but that does not yet make the market “male”.
At 585 Zolotoy the direction is the same: women account for 71% of units, men 29%, and the 25–44 group for 49.3% of units. These data cannot be mechanically added to Sokolov to obtain an “average Russian”. Two large retailers independently show a noticeable female base and a concentration of demand in young and middle adulthood.
Ex Libris, in a December 2025 – April 2026 study (n=2,500), reports for Sokolov buyers 58% women and 38% men, for Sunlight 44% and 30% respectively. These pairs need not add to 100%: the published wording describes the brand’s audience, not a passport roll. Gender here is a poor substitute for motive. A man may be choosing a gift, wearing jewellery himself, or taking part in a joint choice; the same is true for a woman.
Male growth extends beyond calendar gifts
If the rise in male demand in Sokolov boutiques is not only about 8 March, New Year and engagements, a repeat survey will show a higher share of men naming personal wear or self-purchase as the reason for the visit. The hypothesis will not survive a check if all of the growth sits in holiday weeks and goods with gift labelling.
Russia: why they buy — gift vs self
The most discussed pair of figures in this corpus is 81% at 585×Artix and 53% at Sravni×Sokolov. The first publication says 81% of respondents buy jewellery as a holiday gift. The second reports that 53% name the aim as a purchase for themselves or a collection; 45% think a self-purchase ticket can be higher than a gift ticket.
On paper the figures conflict. In the questionnaires they do not: these are two different frames. One asks about a holiday gift, the other about a personal and collecting motive. A person who gave jewellery in December may well have bought themselves a ring in spring. And in one deal the initiator, the payer and the future owner sometimes turn out to be different people.
| Indicator | What was measured | Why the results do not add up |
|---|---|---|
| 81%: 585×Artix | Purchase of jewellery as a holiday gift | Describes the question and context of that study, including a holiday occasion |
| 53%: Sravni×Sokolov | Purchase for oneself or a collection | A different question: personal motive and a collecting scenario, not a mandatory alternative to a gift |
| 45%: Sravni×Sokolov | A self-purchase may have a higher ticket than a gift | A judgement about comparing tickets, not the frequency of such deals |
This table is needed not for a quarrel between two press releases, but as a reminder of different optics. If a brand wants to understand demand, one questionnaire should meet the occasion of the last deal, the addressee, the season, the ticket, the channel and whether the purchase was planned. A single question “why do you buy jewellery?” will not do that work.
585×Artix complemented a survey of 1,100 people with in-depth interviews and described the life-affirming, image-makers, achievers and ascetics. These are useful observational labels for a conversation about what jewellery means. But group shares are not disclosed — so they cannot be assigned a market size or an average ticket.
In the Sokolov×hh.ru survey among women, 28% buy jewellery for themselves, 27% are glad to receive it from a partner. Among men, 19% buy jewellery for themselves, and 61% almost never buy or receive it. These answers do not line up on a single scale: a respondent may have chosen several scenarios close to them. For retail, the fact of their coexistence matters more.
Otkritie Bank wrote that most people buy jewellery about once a year; every fifth man and every seventh woman call it a financial cushion. In the Renaissance Insurance × Sokolov study among 1,204 women, 20% consider jewellery a reliable investment, 26% a risky way of saving, 41% have a collection, and 76% have never had it professionally appraised. The last detail is sobering: a sense of the object’s value and a confirmed market price are different plots.
Self-purchase pulls the considered ticket upward
The Sravni×Sokolov answer about a higher ticket for oneself points to a possible effect, but does not prove it. A check will need transactions tagged “for whom” and “on what occasion”, plus controls for product, season and channel. If the median gift ticket in comparable baskets is not lower, the assumption falls.
How to read diverging surveys
In this category the error often comes from a short retelling. “They buy as a gift” may mean the last deal, a habit, or a holiday case. “For oneself / a collection” may mean an admissible aim, not the only action a person took in a year. And “buyer” in one source is a CRM client, in another a site visitor, in a third an adult in a mass survey.
Samples also diverge by definition. Sokolov boutiques, the 585 client base, Ex Libris audiences and marketplaces need not resemble one another. The Renaissance Insurance survey is built on women; The Knot looks at engagement in the US. No careful average of such series will become an indicator for Russia.
Trust stands apart. At Smart Diamonds, 68% trust a certificate, 44% an independent expert. These are not competing ends of a scale. A buyer can ask for a certificate, then show the piece to a specialist and still come to a familiar store to see how the stone sits. The figures describe different ways of taking risk off the table.
Where and when they buy
Online is not equal to a marketplace. In Ex Libris, 1% of respondents named a marketplace as the main place of purchase. That is a self-report of the main place, not a map of all contacts with the product. Sokolov, in turn, put e-commerce in 2025 at 29–30.6%, marketplaces at 13–14.9%. The brand has its own online store; the buyer has search, comparison and payment at different points. These routes need not coincide.
In Ex Libris, 50% trust Sokolov, 39% Sunlight, 34% 585. This is not a laboratory quality score and not a sales share. For an expensive purchase a familiar name reduces uncertainty: documents, guarantee, consultation, a chance to see the piece and to resolve a question after the sale are tied to it.
Offline holds on the same need for confidence. Smart Diamonds records 76% offline purchases, The Knot 64% of engagement-ring purchases in store. Countries and products differ, but the observation is one: if the purchase matters, people often need to see the piece before paying. Yandex’s historical estimate — about 33 days on the path to purchase, with eight in ten users searching mass-market — explains well why the last click almost never tells the whole story.
Verifiability matters more than a single price when choosing a channel
A buyer who needs confidence in the certificate, returns or how the piece sits may go to a store even with a mid ticket; a familiar item may be ordered online for a larger sum. This can be checked with questions about brand knowledge, the need to inspect and service terms. The hypothesis will be wrong if, after such controls, only basket price explains the format of purchase.
How much they spend
CheckIndex for January–April 2026 reported a median ticket in the “jewellery and costume jewellery” category of 13,440 roubles: 12% higher year on year with a 10% fall in units. Without a split by assortment the cause cannot be named exactly — it may be price, a change of basket, the mix of buyers, or several factors at once.
Sokolov put the market average ticket in 2025 at 10,075 roubles, and in Q1 2026 at 10,806 roubles. These values cannot be matched to CheckIndex as the same measurement: one is a mean, the other a median; CheckIndex’s perimeter also includes costume jewellery. Data Insight gives online tickets for Sunlight — 8,720 roubles, Sokolov — 11,590 roubles, 585 — 14,430 roubles, MIUZ — 67,670 roubles. That is more a portrait of different product baskets than a ranking of “expensive” brands.
In The Knot’s US wedding sample the average ring cost is 4,600 dollars: the natural option about 7,000 dollars, lab-grown about 4,300 dollars. This is a local wedding metric, not a Russian price tag and not the price of any ring.
Global: engagement, self-purchase, origin
The Knot 2026 reports that 61% of centre stones in engagement rings in its US sample are lab-grown. There, too, 64% of rings were bought in store, and 77% of couples decided within four months. These data are useful for understanding one large purchase mission — engagement. They say nothing by themselves about the share of grown stones in all jewellery in Russia or the world.
De Beers, in a US study, notes that millennials and zoomers account for more than 75% of the value of demand for natural diamonds. Zoomers account for 23% of value at 18% of population; their average spend is 4,080 dollars versus 2,250 dollars for boomers. Bridal is 25% of natural-demand value, non-bridal 75%. The wedding market is visible, but most of the value of the natural category lies outside it.
BriteCo in October 2025 (n=1,002) reported that 80% of US adults buy fine jewelry for themselves. That is an answer about the prevalence of a practice, not a share of spend or a frequency. It coexists easily with The Knot’s data: the same person may buy jewellery for themselves and one day choose an engagement ring.
Synthesis and discussion
Russian sources do not give one portrait — they repeat several important circumstances. Women make up most of the client bases of large chains; men are growing more visibly in Sokolov boutiques; the core of demand sits between the mid-twenties and the mid-forties. But the question “who is this?” is still weaker than “in what situation are they buying?”.
Gift and self-purchase are more reasonably kept as two separate variables. The first describes addressee and event, the second initiative and personal meaning. With that setting, 81% holiday gifts and 53% purchases for oneself or a collection stop looking like a paradox. They answer different questions and may well belong to one person in different months.
Channel, too, cannot be reduced to a binary choice. Brand, certificate, independent expertise and an offline consultation close different risks. So a person may study a product card online, clarify parameters by phone and buy in store. A claim about the “investment-ness” of jewellery needs still more caution: surveys show owners’ attitudes, not liquidity, commission, buyback price or the appraisal of a specific piece.
Scenarios and hypotheses
The buyer’s occasion shapes the message more than demographics
Inside one age group, arguments for a gift, self-purchase and engagement should diverge more than between genders on the same occasion. This can be tested with an experiment on a single assortment. If after controlling for price and demographics the occasion adds no explanatory power, the hypothesis is not confirmed.
A familiar brand shortens the path but does not cancel offline
A repeat client may make fewer touches before purchase while keeping the habit of trying the piece on. New and repeat deals should be compared on number of contacts and probability of a visit. Identical results for a familiar and an unfamiliar brand will drop this version.
A collection creates demand for service, not necessarily for investment
Collection owners may more often ask about appraisal, insurance, repair and refresh. The check is a comparison with other buyers at the same purchase frequency. No difference will mean that the word “collection” does not describe a separate service need.
Limitations
These are open results with different samples, wordings, geographies and periods. CRM shows a chain’s clients, and a self-report depends on memory and on the meaning a respondent puts into “collection”, “investment” or “gift”. Some numbers refer to jewellery in general, some to fine jewelry, natural diamonds, grown stones or engagement rings.
The commissioner’s commercial interest affects at least the topic of the study, so Smart Diamonds and De Beers are given with their industry affiliation. Tickets are not brought to one basket, currency or region. Links make it possible to check primary publications, but pages and questionnaires can change.
Conclusions
A jewellery buyer is not a socio-demographic profile but a set of concrete jobs. In Russian chains there are more women, male demand in Sokolov boutiques is growing faster, and the age core sits between young and middle adulthood. But behaviour is best explained by the occasion of purchase.
81% holiday gifts at 585×Artix and 53% purchases for oneself or a collection at Sravni×Sokolov do not contradict each other: they come from different questions and do not describe mutually exclusive groups. For an expensive deal, trust, documents and a chance to see the piece remain important; e-commerce and marketplaces should be counted as different channels.
US figures are needed as context, not as a template for Russia. The Knot’s 61% lab-grown is a metric of US engagement rings, and De Beers separately shows bridal and non-bridal demand for natural diamonds. The next useful step for the market is a single survey of the last purchase: addressee, occasion, origin of the stone, channel and ticket should be in one questionnaire.
FAQ
Who buys diamonds and jewellery in Russia?
In Sokolov boutiques in 2024 women were 74% of buyers, men 26%; the core is 26–35. In 585 Zolotoy’s CRM women accounted for 71% of units, men 29%, and the 25–44 group 49.3%. These are chain data, not a census of the market.
Is jewellery more often bought as a gift or for oneself?
585×Artix reported 81% holiday gifts, Sravni×Sokolov 53% purchases for oneself or a collection. They cannot be compared directly: questions and samples differ, and one person may buy both as a gift and for themselves.
Is it true that men have started buying jewellery more often?
In Sokolov boutiques, male demand in 2024 grew 35% year on year, female 19%. That is the dynamics of one chain and does not prove the same trend for all channels and categories.
Where do people buy jewellery: online or offline?
Smart Diamonds reports 76% offline purchases, The Knot 64% of engagement-ring purchases in store. At Sokolov, e-commerce in 2025 was 29–30.6%, marketplaces 13–14.9%; Ex Libris names a marketplace as the main place of purchase for only 1%. Definitions and samples differ.
What tickets do the sources name?
CheckIndex reported a median ticket of 13,440 roubles for January–April 2026. Sokolov put the market average ticket in 2025 at 10,075 roubles, and in Q1 2026 at 10,806 roubles. Median and mean cannot be substituted for each other directly.
Is jewellery an investment?
Surveys record that perception, but it is not a promise of return, liquidity, or a professional appraisal of the piece.
What is the share of lab-grown in engagement rings?
The Knot in 2026 reports 61% lab-grown centre stones in its US wedding sample. That figure cannot be transferred to all jewellery, other countries or the whole diamond market.
